Vehicle Checks for Test Day

Complete pre-drive vehicle inspection checklist. Know what to check and how to demonstrate it.

🔧 Under the Bonnet

Engine Oil

Remove dipstick, clean, reinsert, check level between min/max

Engine Coolant

Check expansion tank level is between min/max markings

Brake Fluid

Confirm reservoir level is at maximum mark

Windscreen Wash

Top up with water and washer fluid

Battery

Check connections are secure and corrosion-free

Air Filter

Ensure filter is clean and not clogged

⚙️ Internal Controls

Demisters

Demonstrate front and rear demister operation

Rear Fog Light

Turn on dipped lights first, then fog switch, check dashboard light

Wipers & Washers

Operate windscreen wipers and spray washer fluid

Horn

Press horn to confirm it works

Lights

Check all lights work: headlights, indicators, brake lights

Mirrors

Adjust all mirrors for good visibility

🚗 External Checks

Tyres

Check tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and pressure

Reflectors

Ensure red reflectors on rear bumper are clean and visible

L-Plates

Display L-plates front and rear (if applicable)

Brake Lights

Check rear lights are working and not damaged

Windscreen

Ensure windscreen is clean and free from damage

Seatbelts

Check all seatbelts are secure and functioning

Important Notes

  • The tester cannot see your eyes, so move your head to show you're checking
  • Point to components clearly and explain what you're checking
  • Know where all components are located before the test
  • Practice these checks until they become second nature

Pre-Test Checklist

  • Vehicle documents present
  • L-Plates displayed (if applicable)
  • All lights working
  • Tyres checked
  • Mirrors adjusted
  • Seatbelts working

Legal Requirements

  • • Minimum tyre tread: 1.6mm
  • • Valid tax disc
  • • Valid insurance
  • • Valid NCT (if applicable)
  • • Valid driving permit
  • • Seatbelts for all passengers
